Appreciating The Small Things

We can get so consumed in focusing on our goals and big ambitions for life. More often than not letting the small moments in life pass us by. If we are truly honest with ourselves it’s rarely the big things we buy or accomplish that bring us the most happiness but all of the small things and moments in-between.

If you have ever struggled with a mental illness like depression, you will know it can feel almost impossible to see past the negative and into the light. Having a consistent practice of observing small moments of joy can really help provide meaning to our lives. It’s not until you make a conscious effort to start paying attention to these things that you begin to appreciate them fully.

Little things make the big things happen

I have started to journal all the things that have gone well at the end of each day. So even on days where things haven’t gone to plan there are still a lot of positives to reflect on. And when the bad days come you have these small pockets of happiness to fall back on. That’s not to say the small things will be able to fix your problems but certainly help to release the heavy load they can cause you to carry.

By taking time to be more present you will start to take each moment as it comes and feel like you have so much more time in your day. We are always looking forward to the future without taking a moment to just be here in the now. The deeper you get into your practice the more your life will be full of gratitude and appreciation. You will start to chase the things that fill you up and bring you fulfillment each day. I wanted to share a list of small things you can look forward to and will help take your practice to the next level.

Moments of appreciation for the small things:

  • Seeing a sunrise/sunset
  • Stretching when you wake up
  • Waking in the night to realise you still have hours before you need to get up
  • First coffee of the day
  • Fresh bedding
  • Reading more of a book you can’t put down
  • Laughing until you cry
  • Hugs with loved ones
  • Freshly washed hair
  • Listening to a song that reminds you of fond memories
  • Being rewarded for hard work
  • A friend calling as you were thinking of them
  • A car journey with no traffic
  • Finding money in your pockets
  • When something you were going to buy turns out to be on sale
  • The feeling after a great workout
  • Sleeping in your own bed after being away from home
  • When someone remembers something you said ages ago

These are just some things that make us appreciate our existence and all of the beauty surrounding us a bit more. Chances are a lot of these are already happening in your life with little effort so as you go through each day you will find there is always be something to celebrate.

  1. This is a great list! My top 4 small things I appreciate would be sunny days, the scent produced when rain falls on dry soil, a friend sending me a funny video, and of course finding money in my pockets especially when I’m broke

  2. Sometimes a successful day for me will include having a shower and getting dressed — and at first I used to criticize myself for this until I realized that sometimes that’s the way it goes. So the small thing I appreciate is the mindset shift away from thinking I am not doing/being enough and that what I need most isn’t always going to be what it’s commonly perceived to be. Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. Great list you have there. Not only is it good to practise gratitude, but it’s looking at the small things that give us a good perspective. Thanks for this post!
