Books That Have Picked Me Up In Hard Times

Reading has provided so much comfort and often a much-needed escape to me in my darkest times. Most importantly, it has enabled me to expand my thinking and allow me to see life from a different perspective. I felt compelled to share the following books as they have been fundamental in creating a shift in my thinking and having a renewed sense of purpose for life.

Maybe You Should Talk To Someone By Lori Gotlieb

The book provides a witty and fresh insight into Lori’s personal story on what it’s like being a therapist. She gives details of the relationships with her patients, going beyond the hour weekly therapy session. The main message I got from the book is the power to change our own lives is already within us. Also, it feels very charming relatable if you have ever been to therapy!

Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins

David Goggins is an ex-Navy SEAL who refused to let his troubled childhood define his future. He has faced countless grueling challenges that have pushed his body and mind to the limit. Proving to himself that he can achieve anything with the right mindset. He has a theory that the majority of humans only use a small part of our brain capacity but we all have the capabilities to push ourselves to be the best. His story is truly inspirational and leaves you feeling full of hope that you can achieve anything in life.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Untamed truly changed my outlook on how I approach my everyday life. To stop apologising and starting being true to yourself, making peace with your flaws. Life becomes more beautiful when you honour who you are and stop trying to live up to the expectations of others. After just a few pages I was hooked and felt so uplifted and had a new energy for life.

The Secret by Rhona Byrne

This hugely successful book shares with the reader daily practices for manifesting the life of your dreams. Some world-renowned spiritual leaders enlighten us with the tools we need to live the most successful life that is available to us. Having everything you desire from life is easily reachable you just need to be in tune with the universe. If you are new to the concept of manifestation it is a great book to start your journey. Expect to see positive changes in your life if you follow the set rules carefully!

The Chimp Management by Steve Peters

Professor Steve Peters has dedicated his life to looking at how the brain works. He reveals incredible details of how to recognise habits of your mind and how you can go about managing your thoughts and emotions. Reprogramming your mind out of negative thinking to cultivate a happier and more fulfilling life.

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Delia Owens tells the story of an abandoned young girl living in the marshland of North Carolina. She faces endless struggles throughout her childhood and has incredible suffering as a result of her isolation and poverty. Kya has an intense fascination with wildlife and spent her life collecting specimen she discovered deep within the marshes. Eventually publishing her life’s work and becomes a best-selling writer. This book resonated with me so strongly because we are able to draw on trauma and negative experiences, to help us grow and become stronger. Building a life that we never imagined was possible.

I invite you to share some of your favourite books that have truly helped you!

  1. A book I have found helpful is ‘Battlefield of the Mind’ by Joyce Meyer. Joyce was sexually abused by her father when she was a young girl. She later found faith and peace in God and eventually learned to forgive her father. She has gone on to help others world wide to realise that we aren’t defined by our past negative situations. She is a motivational preacher, and best selling author.
