Is Too Much Routine Bad For You?

Typically having some kind of routine, enables us to lead a more productive, organised, and satisfying life. And while this is largely true there can come a point where certain habits and routines are bringing us down more than they are lifting us up. When we develop a habit it starts to become something we give very little thought to. It’s almost like our brains are on autopilot. There could be many things we are missing out on because we are so consumed by our daily habits and routine. In today’s post I wanted to touch on some ways too much routine could be bad for you.

1. You become too attached to outcomes

If you like to have every part of your day planned out it can cause a real spanner in the works when things don’t go as planned. Often it triggers us to feel stressed and like a failure for the things we haven’t achieved. So many things happen in our lives that are way beyond our control. Therefore, being able to go with the flow is a great quality to possess. It’s often said the more we let go of expectations, the happier our lives become because we have been able to detach ourselves from the outcome.

2. There is little room for spontaneity

If there is little room to be spontaneous in your life, that could be a sign that it’s time to shake up your routine. Life is unpredictable and there will always be things that come up that were not part of the plan. And so there is a lot of power in how we choose to respond to what life throws at us. For example, you suddenly find yourself invited to two birthdays on the same day. You could weigh up the pros and cons of each or just decide to split your time between the two. Being spontaneous can be fun, and sometimes the best moments in our lives are the ones that were not planned. You shouldn’t let your habits get in the way of doing something that has the potential to bring more enjoyment into your life.

3. Reduced creativity

Having too much of a structured routine can also make it difficult to allow for creative thinking. It can block you from coming up with new ideas or seeing things from a different perspective. We are more likely to be creative when our minds have the freedom to wander and be curious. But if you are too caught up in all of the things you have to get done you are not permitting yourself that time. When our lives are the same day in day out it can get boring. Things are unlikely to change and so there is no space for us to grow or evolve as people. Setting some time aside each day to do something you enjoy or try something new can help spark your creativity.

It’s worth taking some time to reflect on the aspects of your life that have fallen into a routine. Think about how your habits make you feel and what life might look like without them. This can give a good indication of which habits are serving you for the better.

Having too much routine can make life feel dull and repetitive but equally doing everything on a whim may not bring you happiness either. The key is in finding a balance between stability and being open to new experiences and opportunities that life has to offer.

What are your thoughts on routines and do you think that too much routine is bad for you?

  1. I tried to stick to a routine life once but it got so boring. You do the same things everyday and there are no new challenges. I think the solution would be to incorporate more things we love doing in our routines or switching it up every few weeks.

  2. I myself am a routine person, mostly because I don’t like thinking about what I need to do, lol. I’ve been eating the same lunch (salad, oats and fruits) for the better part of two years now, and I’ve also stuck to an exercising, meditating, and writing routine. I think that the lazier you are, the more you need routine, and I’m as lazy as people can get. Anyway, thanks for this post!

    1. Some kind of routine can help eradicate the need to think about what you are doing 24 hours a day. I saw your routine on your latest post, its impressive! I can resonate with the laziness… if i didn’t have a routine I could easily waste a day away doing nothing! Thanks for reading
